What is Emotional Intelligence?
Peter Salovey and John D. Mayer define is as “The ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions”.
Emotional intelligence is something that you can learn with practice; it is not an innate talent.
How is it different to IQ?
Emotional intelligence differs to IQ because it is focused on emotional thinking and to perceive emotions, thinking, understand emotional meanings in others and oneself. IQ is about the ability to learn and understand concepts (eg. Math skills, word comprehension), and apply them.
Why is it important?
Emotional intelligence is import because it helps to create useful skills such as brilliant work performance, outstanding leadership, and the ability to create the conditions for happiness.
